Keeping Your Pets Safe During the Historic Summer Cicada Emergence

Little Rock (KATV) โ€” With summer approaching, so is the largest cicada emergence in over two centuries. Cicada Brood XIX, emerging every 13 years, and Brood XIII, emerging every 17 years, will be buzzing together for the first time since 1803.

While cicadas are harmless to humans, the Best Friends Animal Society is offering reminders to help keep pets safe during this cicada mania.

Tips for Pet Safety During Cicada Season

  1. Time Your Walks:
    • Supervise and limit outdoor activities during the warmer parts of the day when cicadas are most active.
    • If possible, avoid areas with large cicada populations when walking your pets.
  2. Leash Love:
    • Always keep your dog on a leash to prevent them from wandering off and potentially ingesting cicadas.
  3. Cicada-Proof the Yard:
    • Inspect your fenced yard for gaps or holes where cicadas might enter. Patching these up can help keep cicadas out and your pets safe.
  4. Muzzle for a Minute:
    • If you can’t prevent your dog from eating cicadas while in the yard or if they aren’t used to being leashed, consider using a muzzle during potty breaks. Ensure your dog is properly trained to wear a muzzle before using this method.

Potential Risks of Cicada Consumption

Although cicadas are not toxic to pets if eaten in small quantities, they can still pose problems.

โ€œTheir hard exoskeletons can pose a choking hazard or cause gastrointestinal upset if consumed in large amounts,โ€ said Dr. Becca Boronat, a veterinarian.

Pets that consume excessive amounts of cicadas may show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, lethargy, lack of appetite, and abdominal discomfort.

โ€œIf you notice any of these symptoms, monitor your pet closely and contact your veterinarian for further guidance,โ€ Dr. Boronat advised.
