ORANGE COUNTY, NC โ€” Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is reminding residents to be vigilant about pet safety during hot temperatures. As our area frequently reaches ninety (90) degrees Fahrenheit this time of year, understanding the dangers for pets is essential for responsible pet ownership.

๐Ÿš— The Danger of Hot Cars

One of the biggest concerns is leaving pets inside cars during the summer months. Temperatures inside parked vehicles can reach deadly levels in just minutes, even if parked in the shade and with the windows cracked. In Orange County, it is illegal to leave animals inside a parked car if the outside temperature exceeds seventy (70) degrees Fahrenheit. Pets cannot sweat to regulate their temperature like humans, and can suffer irreversible organ failure, often fatal, within minutes in an overheated environment.

It is crucial that pets have access to fresh water and shade when they are outdoors. Pets can become dehydrated quickly, and having shade helps protect them from the sun.

Walking pets in extreme temperatures is not advised. The heat can cause heatstroke, and hot pavement can damage their feet. Extreme temperatures are particularly hard on senior pets and those with medical conditions.
