About three dozen dogs enjoyed a cool dip in Liberty Pool on September 1, 2022. This annual Doggie Dip event, a partnership between Spokane Parks and SpokAnimal, raises funds for High Bridge Dog Park. Each Spokane city pool (except Witter) allowed dogs to enjoy the water now that the summer swim season ended last week.

Summer offers great opportunities for pets. After months of rain and cold, dogs can romp at the beach and laze in the grass, while cats can bask in a sunny spot by a favorite window. However, the extreme weather can be stressful for pet parents. Here’s how to keep your pets safe and cool in higher temperatures.
🕒 Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day
Planning ahead is key. If the day is going to be brutal, take your dog for a walk either early or late in the day, says Amy Sparrow, owner of Furkid Sitting and Services in Baton Rouge. If mornings and evenings are still hot, shorten the walks and let your dog sniff around instead. Playing indoor games, like hiding treats or toys, can also help tire them out.
🚗 Never Leave Your Pet in the Car
Seriously, don’t. Cars get dangerously hot very quickly, even with the windows slightly open. If you must bring your pet in the car on a hot day, cool it down first with air conditioning. There are air conditioning extenders and fans you can use to ensure airflow reaches the back of the car.
🏊 Make it Fun to Keep Cool
Encourage your dog to stay cool by letting them play in a foldable dog pool. Tiffany Jackson, a registered veterinary technician, suggests using the pool to give your pets frozen treats for easy cleanup. You can also make frozen treats inside a Kong or use splash pads, which are like sprinklers for dogs.
💧 Prioritize Hydration
Ensure your pets stay hydrated, especially when they’re active outside. Carry cool water in an insulated container and offer it to your pet regularly. Be aware of how much water your pet typically drinks to recognize if they’re not drinking enough. However, don’t force them to drink excessively to avoid water toxicity.
🔥 Know Your Pet’s Risk Factors for Heat Exhaustion
Certain pets are more susceptible to heat exhaustion, including brachycephalic dogs, older dogs, younger dogs, those with a lot of fur, and dark-colored dogs. Additionally, some medications can increase heat sensitivity. Be aware of your pet’s normal behavior to spot signs of overheating early.
🚨 Take Early Action
If your pet shows signs of overheating, such as excessive panting or lethargy, immediately bring them indoors to a cool area. Offer them cool water and consider spraying them down with water (test the water temperature first). Avoid using wet towels or immersing them in cold water, which can be counterproductive. If your pet’s condition worsens, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
