As cannabidiol, or CBD, gains traction for its perceived health benefits, many pet owners are turning to CBD as a potential remedy for various pet ailments. However, with limited evidence on its efficacy and safety in animals, it’s crucial for owners to be well-informed when selecting CBD products for their furry companions. Dr. Amy Savarino, chief pharmacist for the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, offers insights on how to evaluate CBD products for pets to ensure they are safe and effective.
“A” Is for Advertising, “B” Is for Buyer Beware CBD, derived from hemp plants, is non-psychoactive and is believed to regulate physiological processes in the body. Marketed CBD products often tout a range of benefits, from calming anxiety to relieving pain and skin ailments in pets. However, owners should be mindful of state laws regarding CBD use, as regulations vary. In states like Texas, hemp-derived CBD products for humans are legal, while marijuana-derived CBD remains illegal due to its higher THC concentration. Additionally, because CBD products lack federal regulation, it’s essential to research and select reputable brands to ensure product quality and accuracy in labeling.
“C” Is for Certificate of Analysis, Communication Owners should request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from the product’s supplier or manufacturer, as it provides information on the product’s quality and composition. Reputable companies typically provide COAs upon request, ensuring transparency and accuracy in ingredient information. Open communication with a veterinarian is also crucial, as CBD may interact with other medications pets are taking. Veterinary guidance can help ensure safe and effective CBD use, and owners should monitor their pets for any adverse reactions, such as increased sleepiness or impaired coordination.
As CBD products gain popularity among pet owners, it’s essential to approach them with caution and informed decision-making. With careful research, selection of reputable brands, and consultation with a veterinarian, owners can navigate CBD use for their pets responsibly, prioritizing their safety and well-being.
